Witnessing the start of a new, young cub’s life is magical. And we’re delighted to share that earlier in May, a lioness from the Nkuhumba pride has been confirmed to have given birth on one of our traversing properties!

Our suspicions first sparked in April when we noticed the absence and changing behaviour of one particular Nkuhuma lioness. The area she frequented is riddled with promising terrain for a potential den, such as steep drainage lines, rocky outcrops, and dense thickets, all offering the protection and seclusion a mother lioness seeks when raising newborn cubs.

Tracking Down the Secret Den

After a few weeks of patient observation, our team seized an opportunity to investigate the area while the lioness and the rest of the pride were preoccupied feeding on a nearby buffalo carcass.

What followed was an intense two-hour search – a blend of anticipation and caution as we scoured the rugged terrain for any sign of a hidden den.

Meeting the Cubs for the First Time

And then, a clue… We saw flattened grass and slightly worn pathways. Subtle yet telling signs that something had been moving regularly through the area.

As we carefully approached the suspected site, nestled beneath a dense thorn thicket, we caught our first glimpse of them… two tiny lion cubs, barely old enough to lift their heads, tucked away safely in the shadows.

The location of the den is nothing short of strategic genius by the lioness. It's incredibly well hidden and nearly impossible to reach with a safari vehicle - a perfect sanctuary for the cubs’ vulnerable first weeks.

The Survival Game

If these cubs survive the precarious early stages of life, they will mark a significant milestone for the Nkuhuma pride, being the first new additions since late 2020. Even more promising, another lioness within the pride has been spotted with suckle marks, which indicates that more cubs may soon be on the way.

We’re keeping a respectful distance and a watchful eye, and will continue to provide updates as these young cubs grow and, hopefully, begin their journey into the wild heart of the Sabi Sand.
